The University of Engineering and Technology (UTEC) in Lima put together a series of IT & new technology seminars and workshops under the theme “Technology Roadmap” for those interested in extending their knowledge in this ever more important area. One of those seminars is the Big Data Course.
Big data is a term that describes the large volume of data – both structured and unstructured – that inundates a business on a day-to-day basis. But it’s not the amount of data that’s important. The importance of big data doesn’t revolve around the amount of data, but what companies and organizations do with it.
Data from any source can be analyzed to find answers that enable cost reductions, time reductions, new product development and optimized offerings, and smart decision making. When big data is combined with high-powered analytics, business-related tasks can be accomplished such as determination of root causes of failures, issues and defects in near-real time, generation of coupons at the point of sale based on the customer’s buying habits, recalculation of entire risk portfolios in minutes and detection of fraudulent behavior before it affects a company.
The Big Data Seminar introduces participants to the concepts of Big Data but focuses on business applications using examples from different sectors. At the end of the seminar participants will have an understanding about how businesses develop in todays data world, about the impact of new technologies and the risks involved.
