Extension of a Migraciones deadline
If Migraciones asks you to submit an additional document during the internal evaluation of an immigration-related application, you are usually given only a very short deadline to do so. If you already have the requested document, this is rarely a problem. But if you don’t, things can quickly become stressful.
Such requests are sent as official notifications to your Buzón Electrónico. They typically inform you that a document required for the approval of your application is missing, unreadable, incomplete, or not submitted in the required form, and usually give you only five days to respond. Missing this deadline can have serious consequences, as Migraciones may dismiss your application altogether.
If the requested document is already in your possession, the solution is straightforward: you create a PDF (maximum size 3 MB) and upload it via the Agencia Digital. This procedure is called Subsanación and is explained step by step in our article “Subsanación – Submitting documents.”
However, if you do not yet have the document - for example because you are waiting for paperwork from abroad, an Apostille, or an official translation - you still must react within the given timeframe. In such cases, Migraciones allows you to request additional time to submit the document.
This request is officially called a Solicitud de ampliación de plazo - an extension of a Migraciones deadline. It can only be requested if you applied for a visa (Cambio de calidad migratoria) or for an extension of your visa.
Once you have successfully submitted the request for an extension, you are granted an additional 30 days to upload the missing document.
Officially, Migraciones allows this extension to be requested only once. However, several readers have reported that a second extension was accepted when a valid reason was provided (for example, waiting for a criminal background check with Apostille from abroad). Be aware, though, that if a second extension is not granted, Migraciones may dismiss your visa or visa extension application, which you could then appeal.

After submitting your application
In most cases, Migraciones does not send a confirmation approving the extension of the deadline.
As long as you upload the requested document within the additional 30-day period, your application should continue normally.
Nevertheless, make sure to regularly check your Buzón Electrónico. If Migraciones overlooks your request and sends another notification reminding you to submit the document, you’ll want to react immediately to avoid problems.
