My carne de extranjera is coming up for renewal next year, but I had planned to be out of Peru at the time for 5 months. 4 years goes quickly! Are there any options apart from changing my plans?

But, the most important thing in your case is to make sure that your residence visa remains valid during your five-month absence. As long as your residence visa is still valid, you have two options:Option 1: Complete your trip as planned and return to Peru entering with your passport and expired carné. Once back in Peru, apply for the renewal immediately. Be aware, however, that you will likely have a bit of a discussion with the immigration officer when you return and that you will have to pay a fine for the late renewal. The fine is 1% of one UIT per month of delay (so, S/ 55 per month in 2026, and probably a bit more next year).
Option 2: Apply for a Duplicado de Carné some time before your trip. While I certainly wouldn't recommend actually losing your carné, be aware that foreigners whose card is lost, stolen, or damaged can apply for a duplicate quite easily. The duplicate is issued with a new validity period of four years. So, you could avoid the problem of returning to Peru with an expired carné altogether. Even though the official processing time is only a few days, expect at least a few weeks until you receive the approval and another few weeks until your new carné is issued. So, if you choose this route, don't wait too long. Here as well, it is essential that your residence visa remains valid. You find more info in our article Replacement for a lost, stolen or damaged carné.I hope this helps.GreetingsEva
