How to apply for the so-called Ampliación de plazos

During the internal evaluation and approval process of your visa application (Cambio de calidad migratoria) or of the application for the extension of your visa, Migraciones may discover that you haven’t uploaded all required documents, that an uploaded document isn’t to their liking, or they want an additional document. You are then sent a notification informing you about it and asking you to submit the document in question.

Read the Migraciones notification carefully. Usually, you only get 5 (sometimes 10) days to upload the document. If you don't react within the deadline, your application can be dismissed.

If you have the document, make a PDF of it (max size 3MB) and upload it on the Agencia Digital. How this so-called Subsanación is done, is explained in our article “Subsanacion - Submitting documents”.

If you don’t have the document yet and won’t be able to submit it within the deadline, you still have to react and can apply for an extension of time to hand in the document later. The process is called Solicitud de ampliación de plazos and can only be requested if you applied for a visa (Cambio de calidad migratoria) or for an extension of your visa.

As soon as you have submitted the request for an extension of the deadline, you have an additional 30 days to upload the document. Officially, you can only apply for the extension of the deadline one time, but a few of our readers informed us that Migraciones accepted a second extension of the deadline when they presented a valid reason (for example, waiting for the criminal background check with Apostille from abroad). However, be aware that if a second extension isn't granted, Migraciones could dismiss your visa / visa extension application (which you then could appeal).

How to apply for an extension of a Migraciones deadline

Applying for the extension of a Migraciones deadline is an easy and straightforward process, which is done on the Migraciones Agencia Digital.

Before you start the application on the Agencia Digital, best first download the required application form on the website of the Peruvian government.

Fill in the form, sign it and make a PDF (max size 3MB).

Then open the Migraciones Agencia Digital and click on Entrar.

On the next page, select "Extranjero". Then choose in the drop-down menu Pasaporte and enter your passport number. Complete the other fields (birth date, nationality, last time you entered Peru and the Captcha) and click on Verificar.

Now you are on the main page of the Agencia Digital. At the top, click on Mesa de Partes.

Click on the little circle in front of Persona natural, enter your e-mail address, confirm your e-mail address and enter your cell phone number. Accept the terms and conditions and click on Siguiente.

  • Under Tipo de solicitud select Solicitudes en general.
  • Under Subtipo select Solicitud de Ampliacion de plazos.
  • Under Seleccione una dependencia choose the Migraciones office where you applied for your visa / visa extension.
  • The Asunto de solicitud field is a subject line; so you could enter here something like, Numero de tramite LM00000000 (replace with the number of your application!!!), Ampliacion de plazo por subsanacion de antecedentes (or whatever applies).

If you haven’t already done so, download the application form by clicking on the red button, fill it in, sign it and make a PDF (max size 3MB).

  • Under Tipo de documento select Carta.
  • N° de folio is 1, if you only upload the application form. If you want to upload a second PDF, probably with a detailed explanation, why you need the extension, write 2.
  • Then upload the form (and, if applicable, the second PDF) and click on Registrar.

You now get a confirmation displayed on your screen that you successfully applied for an extension of the deadline. Download and/or print the page and keep it safe. That’s it.

Please note: Most probably Migraciones won’t reply to your request to extend the deadline and won’t confirm the extension. As long as you upload the document Migraciones asked for within the 30-day extension time, you are fine. Nevertheless, check your Buzon electronico regularly, so in case Migraciones missed your request and sends another notification with a second notice to upload the document, you can react in time.

    Hey Eva, 
    I submitted a solicitud for an extension of a Migraciones deadline (they only gave me two days), but I got a notice tonight saying that they were ending my trámite because I didn't present the document. Can I appeal this decision? If so, how do I do it?

      Hello Bekah,

      I don't know about your situation but it's very uncommon that Migraciones only extends the deadline by 2 days and then immediately denies your application (did you miss any other deadlines given or/and did you fill in that you would like an extension for 30 days on the form?)

      Anyway, you now have 15 days counted from the day the denial was issued to leave the country or appeal the Migraciones decision. The tramite is called “Solicitud de reconsideración de tramite”.

      Depending on your situation it may also be wise to contact Migraciones / get an appointment for a personal appointment and ask for their help.

      If nothing changed, to apply for the Reconsideración de tramite download the form letter on the government website. Fill it in and sign it.

      Then enter the Agencia Digital.

      On the main page click on Mesa de Partes at the top right corner.

      - Click on the little circle in front of Persona natural, enter your e-mail address, confirm your e-mail address and enter your cell phone number. Accept the terms and conditions and click on Siguiente.

      - Under Tipo de solicitud select Solicitudes en General.

      - Under Sub-tipo select Reconsideración de (I assume!!!) Cambio de Calidad Migratoria

      - Under Seleccione una dependencia choose the Migraciones office where you applied for your visa.

      - Under Asunto de la solicitud write something like Recurso de Reconsideración and your tramite number of your denied application

      - Under Tipo de documento select Carta

      - Under N° de Folio write the number of documents you upload below.

      - Under Adjuntar archivos upload
      the filled in and signed form letter
      if you want: another personally written letter explaining your situation and asking to give you a bit more time
      if you already have: the document they asked you to upload

      - When you have uploaded all documents click on registrar, download the confirmation and start praying that Migraciones will reconsider their decision. 

      Check your Buzon daily to not miss any notification from Migraciones.

      Thanks for your response! I know, before they’ve given me a plazo of five days. However, I had to subsanar documents twice this time, and both times they only given me a plazo of two days. The second time, I didn’t understand what they wanted (I sent the document they asked for), so I sent an extension for ampliación de plazo for 30 days. However, a couple days later, they sent me a notice of “no presentado” and ended my tramite. I was shocked and now very lost and confused as to what to do. Is it possible to start a new tramite? The documents that I used haven’t expired yet.

      Yes, if you haven't uploaded a required document at all or to their liking, Migraciones send you a notification in your Buzon electronico only giving you anything between 2 to 5 days to respond. If you don't respond to this either by uploading the document or by applying for an extension they deny your application. 

      I never heard that they only give you 2 days when you request an extension of a deadline. Usually, Migraciones don't even answer to the extension application. So, something seems off.  

      If you still have the confirmation of your application for an extension of their deadline you should apply for the reconsideracion, explain your situation and upload the confirmation of the extension request; or get in contact with Migraciones immediately and try to sort this out.

      Right now, you cannot apply again as with the denial of your visa application (I assume you applied for a visa) you got as well a salida obligartoria notice, so you must leave the country within 15 days. Your only option is to leave Peru and return and then re-apply or apply for the reconsideracion.

    Under Seleccione una dependencia, the place where I submitted my cambio de calidad migratoria is not listed. There were 7 locations in Lima to submit the visa application, but to submit the extension deadline form, only one location in Lima shows up (just Lima, not Lima Norte or Lima Sur, etc.)

    RREE said they won't be able to finish legalizing the birth certificate on time, so I am trying to fill out the form to extend the deadline. Where it says at the top of the page "Sumilla" am I supposed to check or X the box? Right afterwards it says Solicito Ampliacion de Plazo.... Then near the bottom of the page, after I put my passport number, it says "con domicilio", am I supposed to put my Peru address? I am trying to do this perfectly, but I am not quite sure what I am doing. Also, the form itself is 2 pages, but the 2nd page is blank except for the exact same declaro at the bottom of the page that is also on the 1st page. Do they want me to upload both pages?

      Hello Jen,

      After the "sumilla" there shouldn't be a check. I would leave it blank. Nothing really makes sense there.

      Then fill in the numero de expediente of your application.

      Make a check in front of the second option "cambio de calidad migratoria" and fill in familiar.

      Yo, "your full name" de nacionalidad "your nationality", identificado con pasaporte (check),...., No° "your passport number", con domicilio en "your Peruvian address" 

      ..... solicito "the number of days you need plus a few" dias habiles.

      @Sunflower I already wrote 30 days for the solicito part, but that sounds like too many now. I really only need a week. I don't have a printer to print another form. I have to get my brother-in-law to do it for me. Can I cross out 30 and write 7 above it, or should I leave it at 30? Or should I ask my brother-in-law to bring me another paper? I know I am overthinking this...I am just overwhelmed with the whole migration process. I don't know what I'd do without your help.

    If I request an extension because I can't get a birth certificate legalized before the deadline, will I be able to request another extension if they tell me later that they need something else (like my officially translated document by a Traductor publico juramentado needs to be legalized, too)? Oh, how do they count the 5 day deadline? Does the day I receive the notification count as day 1? Do they count weekends? I don't want to have my application dismissed because I didn't calculate the time to respond correctly. Thank you again.

      Usually (!!!), once Migraciones reviewed your application they send you a notification with everything there are not happy with. So, if they only mentioned the missing legalization, everything else seems to be ok and that should be it. 

      However, we are in Peru and you never know. So, the deadline is counted from the day the notification was issued (might not be the day you received it, so look on the document when it was issued). This day counts as well. 

      Read your notification carefully, somewhere you find the number of days they give you to upload the document. In most cases it's 5 dias habiles (business days with Saturday counting as a business day), but sometimes they only give 3 dias habiles.

      If you cannot meet the deadline, apply for the extension on the last day. This gives you an additional 30 days. 

      In the rare case that Migraciones finds something else not to their liking, they will send you a new notification giving you again 3 or 5 days. And yes, then you can apply for another extension.

      @Sunflower It simply says, "Plazo: 5 días." I don't see the word "habiles" anywhere in the notification. I am going to RREE tomorrow morning. Hopefully, they can do it soon. If not, I will apply for the extension. Thanks for all of your guidance. I would be so lost without your help.

    Thank you for your guidance. I received my Family Visa in Nov. '23. I would not have succeeded without your guidance!
    Early Dec. I returned to my previous home in Florida US to dispose of my belongings, sell my home etc. A huge undertaking that requires all the permitted 'out of the country' days.
    A little over 2 weeks ago an EF2 tornado caused severe structural damage to my house, so I am in the process of completing the SPECIAL PERMIT TO STAY OUT OF THE COUNTRY MORE THAN 183 DAYS choice on the pdf form: 'SUMILLA: SOLICITO AMPLIACION DE PLAZO PARA SUBSANAR DOCUMENTOS'

      Hello KArl,

      thank you so much for your nice words. It's always great to hear that our articles help foreigners through the Peruvian bureaucratic jungle.

      If you want to extend the time you can stay outside the country as a resident the Solicitud de plaza para subsanar documentos is the wrong tramite. This procedure only has to be applied for if you can't upload requested documents on time.

      The correct procedure is called "Solicitar el permiso de estadía fuera del país por 183 días calendario". When I remember correctly you must pay on pagalo.pe for 07562 Permisos and then apply for it on the Agencia Digital on the Mesa de Partes under Tramites TUPA.
