Located in the old and traditional district of Barranco, is the Museum Pedro de Osma. The Museum has one of the best painting collections in Peru with pieces dating back to the 16th century. The paintings from well-known artists are on linen cloth, metal, wood, glass and leather. Antique pieces of furniture, silver, sculptures and textiles are as well part of the collection.

Don Pedro de Osma Gildemeister laid the foundation of the Museum Pedro de Osma with his personal collection. He had remarkable knowledge of the Peruvian art and gradually gathered various exquisite objects reflecting Peruvian art ranging from the 16th to the 19th century. All pieces were kept in the large family house in Barranco, arranged in a tight exhibition (style of the European palace museums in the 19th century).

Paintings Gallery

The Museum Pedro de Osma has paintings from well-known artists on linen cloth, metal, wood, glass and leather. Some of them date back to the 16th century. The collection includes religious images, portraits and scenery from Peru (Cuzco, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Trujillo, etc.). There are paintings from the "Alto Peru", Bolivia, Quito, Mexico, Spain, Germany and Italy.

Sculptures Gallery

The collection of sculptures and carvings is unique. Materials like wood, stone, ivory and glued fabrics have been used by the artists. Some of the ivory pieces are from Europe. Remarkable are the two antique altars, other beautiful altarpieces, a baptismal font, various columns, the tabernacles and carvings.

Silver Art Gallery

The Silver Gallery of the Pedro de Osma Museum presents a good selection of silver pieces for religious or domestic use including masks (crafted with different techniques) for religious purposes. Within the collection are an important number of objects with delicate lacy metal ornamentation (made from twisted wire in silver).

One of the biggest desires of the Foundation formed by Pedro and Angelica de Osma, was to give to the country an exhibition room only for silver art (Plateria), based on the collection gathered by Don Pedro de Osma.

Furniture Gallery

The Museum Pedro de Osma possesses a variety of vice regal and republican furniture, closets, tables, decorated cabinets, leather trunks and so on. Very exclusive is the collection of wooden furniture with inlays of pearls and shells. Some of the pieces still have their original surface finishing (natural fine wood) others are preserved with beautiful paintings.

Engravings and Books Gallery

The Pedro de Osma Museum conserves a selected collection of Peruvian and European engravings. The most important ones are:

  • San Martín de Porres in his infirmary (century XVII )
  • Juan Bernabe Palomino - Genealogy of the Incas
  • Genealogy of the Incas

Textile Gallery

The museum displays an interesting selection of Peruvian carpets. Especially the one from Cajamarca is standing out. The collection of religious ornaments is extensive and even if you're not the biggest fan you'll be enjoying the beautiful pieces!
