Central Post Office Building in Lima

Central Post Office Building

Casa de Correos y Telegrafos

Address
Jr. Conde de Superunda 170
District
  • City Center
City (Peru)
Lima

The Central Post Office was opened in 1897 and was responsible for all national and international correspondence. When technology developed and the telegraph was introduced to Peru it became the main relay station for all transmissions. At the beginning of the 20th century the building was completely remodeled to fit into the new European style of Lima and received the first telephone switchboard in Peru.

Even though the beautiful building, actually one of the oldest post offices in Latin America, was a perfect place for the Postal and Philatelic Museum, it was closed down a few years ago. Since 2011 you find the Museum of Peruvian Gastronomy at the old Casa de Correos y Telegrafos leading you through over 2000 years of culinary richness in Peru.

Don't miss the rear of the building; the entrance is via the Pasaje Piura. A unique arcade with lots of small shops is waiting for you to be discovered.
