"Crowned Shield" design

The coins with the "Crowned Shield" design were produced from March 1572. The coins were marked with the initial "X" belonging of the designer Xinés Martínez, but his coinage suffered interruptions because the Lima Mint did not work between March 1574 and September 1577.

At the restart of operations the same was reissued but by the designer Diego de la Torre, whose initial appears on the coins with a "D". This coin features the Monogram King "PVS" - "PHILIPVS". The custom of marking the coins with a "P" for the Vice-royalty of Peru has often led to confusion between the coins manufactured in Lima, La Plata and Potosí. To differentiate the coins from those produced in Potosí, the Lima Mint placed a star on one side. The coins minted in La Plata in 1573 are identical to those minted in Potosí in 1574.
