Attached to the Ministry of Production, IMARPE, the Peruvian Institute of the Sea, is a technical entity focussed on scientific research of Peru's marine environment and continental waters and ecosystems.

Advising the Peruvian government in all matters related to the rational and sustainable use of marine and fresh water ressources, IMARPE studies and monitors the Peruvian waters, tries to understand the natural climate variability, does reasearch on marine and fresh water wildlife as well as on environmentally friendly fishing methods.

IMARPE has coastal laboratories in Tumbes, Paita, Santa Rosa, Huanchaco, Chimbote, Huacho, Pisco, Camaná, Ilo and Chicama, and continental stations in Puno and Ucayali. Additionally, it runs three large scientific research vessels: the “Humboldt”, the “José Olaya Balandra” and the “Luis Alberto Flores Portugal”.
