As in many countries around the globe, Peru commemorates the labor movement and the achievement of workers’ rights on May 1.
The Peruvian Labor Day was established as official public holiday in 1905 during the presidency of José Pardo y Barreda, after the first employment laws regulating the work of women and children, free Sundays, holidays and work accidents were introduced.
