Lima is one of the most interesting and challenging cities in South America with a huge archaeological, historical, and cultural past. Most of its treasures might be well hidden, but are worth being discovered. For many visitors, Lima is just an unavoidable must; a sprawling, chaotic, dirty and ugly metropolis, the starting and ending point on their trip to more interesting and exciting gems Peru offers. But this assumption doesn't do justice to Lima.

The Plaza Mayor or Plaza de Armas (as it was known until 1990), is the oldest public place in Lima. In 1535 the conquistador Francisco Pizarro founded on the area of an existing indigenous settlement the city of Lima. Parque Zoologico Huachipa is Lima's second zoo. Even though way smaller than the Parque de las Leyendas the privately owned park is a great place for families to enjoy a day. The zoo is a nicely arranged refuge for over 1000 animals of more than 200 species.
