Instead of depending on your national and Peru's postal service Serpost, especially when sending and receiving important documents, the standard courier services of course also have offices in Lima. The shipment of letters and parcels from Lima to any other country in the world is easy and trouble free, but expensive. A document to Europe or the US takes around four working days.
Receiving simple document envelopes is also unproblematic. They are normally delivered to your doorstep without delays. But sources reported often unsolvable problems with unjustified and high import taxes and turning up additional fees requested from the various courier services, when receiving mail containing anything else than a document or a piece of paper. So if sending a "care package" to your loved ones to Peru, either be prepared that the receiver has to pay extra duties or delivery charges (even if stated otherwise in your home country) or better send it as certified mail with the normal postal service.
With the ever-increasing trend to deliver news online, the good old newspaper, printed on paper, which provided readers with the latest local, national and international news for centuries, seems to be on the way out. Around the globe newspaper publishers and other print media adapted to changes in technology and reader’s demands and today offer news stories and other information seemingly every second online.
While in Peru the major printed newspapers all have online editions as well where readers find the latest news or can flick through a digital version of the latest edition free, buying a “physical” newspaper for a few Soles at the little bodega around the corner, at one of the many kiosks or from vendors at intersections is still highly popular.
And the choice is wide ranging from well-respected and reputable broadsheets which provide readers with a comprehensive coverage of national and international daily news to countless tabloids full of sensational stories, famous people, big headlines and lots of photos.
To give you an overview, find below a selection of Peruvian newspapers which are distributed across the country.
Listening to the radio is a great way to improve your Spanish skills and get a feeling for the Peruvian music scene. Very popular here with young and old are Creole music, Cumbia, Salsa and Reggae; so quite a lot of radio stations broadcast this music style. If you once in a while miss the good old Rock & Pop music in English, no worries, you won't be left out in the cold. Almost all stations have a web page where you can listen online.
For most of us television is an important must even when being on holidays. With introducing satellite and cable TV in Peru, we now can enjoy, depending on the provider, around 150 channels including HD transmissions; only very few are national programs, the rest include international TV channels (movie, news, documentary, entertainment...), mostly from the US that are broadcasted in Spanish and English and some other foreign language channels.
When you are living in one of the better hotels, you quite surely have a TV in your room and can zap through the channels as you please. Most hostels have a TV room. Or just stop by one of the many small bars or restaurants where the TV is switched on the entire day. Here you can enjoy an afternoon with Peruvian news, sports or the latest telenovela (soap opera). A good way to improve your Spanish listening skills and get informed about what's going on in the country.
