Dragon Fruit

The Pitahaya, also known as Dragon Fruit, pitaya, pitajon, yaurero and warakko, is native to Mexico, Central America and some Southern American countries like Peru. Pitahaya is the fruit of a cactus and comes in three colors: yellow with white flesh, pink with pink flesh and pink with white flesh. In strong contrast to its vibrant exterior the flesh has a lovely mild sweetness and tastes like a cross between a kiwi and a melon. Dragon Fruit is very refreshing and has numerous health benefits.

Pitahaya is comprised of 90% water, is low in calories and rich in iron, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin B1, B2, B3 and Vitamin C (especially the pink ones). It has antioxidant properties eliminating free radicals. The Dragon Fruit is known as natural laxative and diuretic. As the fruit is believed to regulate blood sugar levels it is ideal for diabetics. Pitahaya is also thought to help lower cholesterol and strengthen the immune system. And the tiny black seed are a great source of healthy Omega 3 fatty acids.

To eat Dragon Fruit just cut lengthwise in half and scoop it with a spoon or separate the flesh from the skin and cut in slices or cubes. Eat the Pitaya fresh as it is or add to a (fruit) salad. Dragon Fruit is also great as refreshing drink, in ice creams, yoghurts, smoothies and jams.
