Arts, Crafts & Souvenir Shopping in Lima
It's common practice buying some typical crafts and souvenirs when visiting a foreign country. Peru has a rich diversity of artisan craftworks and you surely find something that will remind you of your amazing time here. If you don't want to drag around local bought souvenirs during your whole trip, Lima is a great place to find arts and crafts from around the country. While some of the pieces you find are truly unique examples of Peruvian craftsmanship, others are mass produced especially for tourists. While wandering around the historic city center, but as well Miraflores and Barranco you surely will come across some nice little shops selling beautiful handicrafts and nice clothing made of Peru's famous alpaca.

A huge selection with hundreds of little stores can be found at the Artisan markets in Miraflores and San Miguel.

Buy your Souvenirs in Miraflores...
Just one block from the roundabout at the big park in Miraflores you find Av. Petit Thouars. On block 52 to 55 are many artisan markets selling nearly everything what Peruvian craftsmanship has to offer. You get the typical souvenirs, nice artisan craftworks, beautiful silver jewelry and other silverware, clothes made of Peru's famous alpaca, funny T-Shirts, pottery, paintings, wooden pieces, and much more from all over Peru.

The markets start directly at the corner with Av. Ricardo Palma. The first smaller ones are the Artesanias Miraflores and Kaypi Artesanias on block 55, followed by the Gran Chimu Handicraft Market, Artesania Señor de Sipan, Gran Chavin, the Cuzco Market, La Portada del Sol and the Inka Market on block 54.

On both sides of Av. Petit Thouars block 53 are two big handicraft markets where most visitors find all the souvenirs they might want to take back home: the Inka Plaza, opened in 2008 and the Indian Market, which is connected with the Mercado de Indios by a passage full of more stalls.

At the moment these markets are probably the place with the best offer of Peruvian arts and crafts in town. There is so much to look at and discover that you might need some time to see everything. So don't rush through and take your time finding the right pieces. And even if prices tend to be standardized (especially for tourists) and seems cheap to you, never pay the asked price and do some bargaining! Payments can be made in Soles and Dollars, some shops also accept credit cards but watch where your credit card goes!

The artisan markets along Av. La Marina are less touristy than the markets in Miraflores and less convenient located. Anyhow even if the area suffered from the growing markets in Miraflores you can still find the one or other "Mercado" selling a good variety of handicrafts from all over Peru. The two bigger markets are Tesoros del Inka on Av. La Marina block 7 and the Gran Mercado Inka on block 8. Check out also adjoining Av. Sucre. When taking your time you surely find some treasures bringing back home from your trip. Prices at the markets in Pueblo Libre seem to be a little bit lower than in Miraflores, but still bargaining is a must!
