Numismatic Series "Natural Resources of Peru"

Numismatic Series "Natural Resources of Peru"

Peru is a country with a variety of natural resources. To highlight three of the most important ones the Central Reserve Bank of Peru issued a small Numismatic Series named "Recursos Naturales del Perú" – "Natural Resources of Peru". Motives for the coins are the Anchovy, Cacao and Quinoa.

The new coins are also legal tender and are not thought to be a replacement for the current S /. 1.00 coins. The coins will circulate simultaneously and can be used in any transaction.

Natural Resources Coins - La Anchoveta

The Anchoveta is a fish of the anchovy family and regularly caught on the coasts of Peru. The anchoveta was chosen as one of the motives for the Numismatic Series "Natural Resources of Peru". The front of the coin shows as you might have figured out two anchovies and a Moche Culture representation (everyday marine life) as a homage to the importance of the natural resource already in ancient Peru.

Natural Resources Coins - El Cacao

Peru and Cacao share an age old relationship. To no surprise cacao was chosen for this coin of the Numismatic Series "Natural Resources of Peru". The front of the coin shows a cacao tree and some fruits. Although the debate is still open about the origin of the cacao tree, the strongest theses confirm that it originated in the tropical Andes foothills, in the Amazonas and Orinoco. Once domesticated in Ancient Peru, it was a fundamental element in previous cultures and their rituals.

Natural Resources Coins - La Quinua

As part of the Numismatic Series "Natural Resources of Peru" this coin features the Quinua crop. The front of the coin shows a Quinua plant, a vessel with some seeds and also states its scientific name: Chenopodium Quinoa. As with all current 1 Nuevo Sol coins on the back you have the Peruvian Coat of Arms. Nowadays called a "supercrop", Quinua played a vital role in the Andean diet for thousands of years.
