Lima is one of the most interesting and challenging cities in South America with a huge archaeological, historical and cultural past. Most of its treasures might be well hidden, but are worth being discovered. For many visitors Lima is just an unavoidable must; a sprawling, chaotic, dirty and ugly metropolis, the starting and ending point on their trip to more interesting and exciting gems Peru has to offer. But this assumption doesn't do justice to Lima.
Over the last years Lima has seen quite a boom of new hotel developments and nearly all the mayor brands are operating in the city. The quality of the service and comfort can easily compete on an international level and it is interesting to see the different ways on how Peruvian elements were adopted in the design. The newer properties have very exclusive installations with fitness centers, spas, swimming pools and conference centers.
Peruvian cuisine is among the most varied and best in the world. It's a reflection of its three main geographical zones, the coast, the Andean highlands and the jungle, and an incorporation of influences from different times and immigrant cultures. While the Peruvian cuisine only is recognized internationally in the last few years, food and its preparation is one important part of the Peruvian culture and a very personal way to express the Peruvian identity.
Peru's economy today reflects like centuries ago its varied geography; the different climate zones facilitate widespread agriculture, the Andes rich in natural resources allow mining and the Pacific Ocean with its fishful waters makes commercial fishing possible. Economic growth continues to be driven by exports of minerals (mainly gold, copper, zinc), textiles, chemicals, agricultural products (garden produce and fruits), fish-meal, services and by energy projects.
Coming to a foreign country is always an exciting experience. Visiting Peru is no exception. So many new impressions might overwhelm you easily and you could get distracted when it comes to a boring, but important issue like money. Most probably you don't know how the Peruvian currency (Nuevos Soles) looks like, before actual being in Peru. Therefore we highly recommend reading our information about the money you will be using during your visit and how "money-issues" are handled in Peru.
Lima is known for its rich historical and cultural past. Long before the Spaniards arrived several other cultures with highly advanced skills in construction, agriculture and arts settled the area of today's Lima. The Spanish colonist added to this legendary cultural legacy. Based on the model of Spanish cities, the "City of the Kings" arose and soon Lima became the political, economic, cultural and religious center of the Spanish colonies in South America. A completely different culture with European and Moorish influence mixed with the indigenous cultural and religious inheritance.
Peru is situated along the boundary of two tectonic plates: the Nazca Plate and the South American Plate. The interface between these two plates is located near the Peruvian coast. At a rate of about 60 mm per year the South American Plate is moving towards the Pacific Ocean over the Nazca Plate. That may not sound a lot but it is enough to put huge strain on the Earth's crust. The pressures are periodically released through earthquakes.
In the last few years Peru developed into one of the leading providers of reasonably priced, high level medical care and offers medical tourists a wide range of procedures including affordable top notch dental care, first class cosmetic surgery and cutting edge health checks and scans.
