Recommended Social Projects & Volunteering Opportunities in Lima

Update the information on social projects in Lima - Peru By no means these are all out there doing a hard job, so if you know other recommendable social projects, charities and volunteer opportunities that need support, please give us their details and after checking them out we'll be happy to include them in our listing.

Social & Economical Situation in Lima

When you are wandering around Limas neat and modern "better" districts like Miraflores, Barranco, San Isidro or even the Historical City Center you might quite easily forget that you are still in the capital of a 3rd world country. And if you don't let yourself be "distracted" by modern shopping facilities, business centers and apartment towers, beautiful restored historical buildings and the unique cultural remains the city has to offer or if you even dare to leave the beaten tourist tracks in Lima, you will soon discover how many people live in poverty and are in need of help.

According to official studies around 20% of Limas population lives in poverty. That's more than 1.6 million people. Looking behind the nicely maintained better suburbs or at the slums surrounding Lima and the thousands of workers earning an average wage of around US$ 200.- to US$ 300.- you will soon realize that there are even more people that need support. Not to forget the people living outside Lima in the underdeveloped regions of the Peruvian highlands or jungle.

Giving a coin or two to beggars on the street might not be considered wrong, but please do us a favor and read our topic on "Begging in Lima" before you do so. Anyhow you might say it's only a drop in the bucket and you're right. If you really want to help, we would like to recommend supporting one of the social projects or charities in Lima (Peru); either with cash and physical donations or with your voluntary work.

How can you Help? Where can you Help?

Do you feel uncomfortable with just donating your money or anything else to a charity you don’t even know? You simply would like to know how your money is spent and where your donations go? Is it more important to you that your help really reaches the ones in need and you don't finance a huge administration machineries? Or you can’t or don’t want to spend hundreds of Dollars being a volunteer for some organization that charge you an arm and a leg just to enable you to actually help? Well, that’s quite understandable!

This should give you an idea why we have compiled a list of some organizations that we consider doing an amazing job with their projects and hard work for Lima’s poor. We would like to recommend them all, as they seen to be honest and trustworthy by allowing you to be part of their progress by archiving all sorts of changes to improve the situation for the community. Volunteers aren't charged any fees like with some other “institutions” or places in Peru – at the most you have to pay a small amount for your food, etc...

HELP us HELP! - LimaEasy Projects 2011

Additionally to LimaEasy's yearly "chocolatada" in a poor area in the district of Ate-Vitarte with gifts and small necessities for the kids, this year we will continue to help a "colegio humilde", the Institución Educativa Fernando Belaúnde Terry in Los Cedros de Villa, Chorrillos. LimaEasy will donate stationery for the children, so we can diminish at least part of the costs for the families incurred each year.

LimaEasy also would like to improve the situation of their "school library". And for that we like to ask for your help. We urgently need books in Spanish language for children and teenagers (suitable for the ages 5 – 15). As everybody with children has the one or other used book at home, loved and read a hundred times, but not age-appropriate anymore, or never really liked, we would appreciate if you donate those books to us for the children of the above mentioned school. Therefore please check out your kid's bookshelves, if there is something you can part with. Every book counts and we are grateful for every small donation!

As a small "Thank you" to all that contributed to the success of this project, we are more than happy to send some pictures of the presentation of the donations and, if desired, to publish their names on www.limaeasy.com.

Of course, any other donations such as stationery, pencil cases, clothing, toys... are welcome too.

Please get in contact with us under help[at]limaeasy[dot]com if you are willing to help. Smaller contributions can be handed over either at a centrally located place in Miraflores or near Ovalo Higuereta, bigger donations could be picked up as well.
