You can pay with your credit card in many shops, restaurants and hotels without big hassles but only with a valid ID. You can withdraw money (Soles or US Dollar) at one of the countless ATMs in whole Lima. At most ATMs you can change the language from Spanish to English, German or French. So you don’t need any help from locals in case your Spanish isn’t that good. Don’t forget the usual safety precautions: Don’t write down your PIN Number anywhere and when withdrawing money don’t let anybody look over your shoulder while entering the PIN. Most ATMs aren’t guarded by police or security companies at night and therefore an increasing number of locals and tourist have been mugged when withdrawing cash.

We strongly recommend to do your withdrawals only at day time at guarded ATMs.

Despite all precautions, if your credit card gets stolen or you loose it, cancel it immediately!

To send money from home to Peru or vice versa is easy and quick, unfortunately it can be quite expensive (depending on the amount the sender will have to pay a substantial fee). Still it’s good to know that in case of an emergency funds can be transferred reliable without an account (Valid ID will be necessary).

Western Union is represented in Peru by a company called Serviban. There are around 600 (!) offices in Lima, that’s why we’ve listed only a few below.
